HOW TO USE A STORY TO HELP TEACH YOUR CHILD TO COPE WITH FRUSTRATION? SOCIAL STORIES

socialstories

The world is a complex place,  a multitude of sensory stimulation, absurd social etiquette, rules and regulations making no sense to the intelligent,

it is no wonder children with Autism become frustrated, not only do our children not understand society, people do not understand them.  Coping with frustration can be difficult if not challenging, many different strategies exist, over the next few weeks, I will be posting various coping mechanisms with free visual downloads, explaining each method in detail.

Social stories are a great way to help your child, allowing the child to visualize strategies, practice with the story, demonstrating multiple options and learning at the child’s pace. A story can be read over and over again, to help the child understand and comprehend.

I created many social stories for Niam to help him understand social rules, etiquette and demonstrated practical coping strategies he can use, ensuring they were practical with easy implementation. I created this story using Boardmaker Picture Symbols provided by the The Picture Communication Symbols © 1981-2010 by Mayer-Johnson LLC.

The story can be laminated for longevity. The book is structured with a simple sentence in large font, a corresponding picture, and the same sentence repeated with visual pictures for those children who require accommodation for reading comprehension.Download the book for free and let us know how you used it, comment and share your experience with other parents and teachers.
