Children with autism are subjected to various stereotypes on a routine basis, autism awareness campaigns have been paramount in distribution of information not only to parents of children with autism, but also to the general public. I can’t tell you how many times I have been told or asked ” It must be hard, when your child is not affectionate” , I stop, and wonder, what do you mean, of course, he is, the notion of persons with autism are like robots and emotionless is a myth as far reaching as our ability to fly to the moon. Movies like the popular “Rain Man” don’t help in breaking the myth only perpetuating it, for those who have not seen the movie, Rain Man does not show any emotions until the end of the movie, being depicted as a character with unusual tics.
This morning I awoke, tired on Saturday morning, lazing in my bed, when Niam my 13 year old son with autism, who still thinks he is a baby, came to cuddle with me and plant a kiss on my right cheek. My older son who is 15 would never come to snuggle, out growing the need for mom years ago, I loved the affection and the reminder of the warmth of cuddling and the feeling of unconditional love. I love Niam does not think it is not cool to be with mom, social stigma not being a part of Niam’s vocabulary, with no social barriers or stigma his heart is pure.
I love it! Autism is Awesome!
